| -0.3371429443359375 | 5.78466311334988 | 2 | Blue Skies Ghana | This organically grown coconut is farmed in Ghana by two cooperatives of organic growers. The coconut is harvested only once it has fallen from the tree when the flesh is dry enough for eating. Traditionally the coconut is cut from the tree whilst the flesh is still moist. This is prefered by locals over the drier, harder-fleshed coconut which we are perhaps more familiar with in Europe.
The husks of the coconuts are removed at the farm before they are delivered to the local factory where they are taken out of their 'hairy' shells and cut into pieces by hand. They are then packed and delivered to branches of Waitrose in the UK often within 48 hours.
So unlike the desiccated coconut that is often used in confectionary products or the coconuts you might win at the fairground, this coconut is completely fresh from the tree. And of course it is entirely ready-to-eat so you don't have to try all manner of creative ways to try breaking in to it!
Any non-edible parts such as the husks or the shells are either composted or used by local Ghanaian craftsmen for making small carpets and door mats, so you don’t have to worry about any waste. | http://www.skytrix.co.uk/images/products/78.gif | 78 | Waitrose Organic Coconut | http://www.ocado.com/webshop/getProductDetails.do?sku=36993011&parentContainer=000117791 | prepared |
| -0.3371429443359375 | 5.78466311334988 | 2 | Blue Skies Ghana | This organically grown sugar loaf pineapple is grown in the Central Region of Ghana by the Blue Skies Organic Collective (BSOC). The BSOC is a Fairtrade Association of over 80 small farms who live in four communities within an area known as 'Ekumfi'. You can read a about some of the farmers by clicking on one of the links on the right of the page.
This particular variety of pineapple is grown over a 14-15 month period which is longer than more familiar varieties of pineapple that are often ‘induced’ by chemicals so that they can be harvested sooner. The sugarloaf has a unique elongated shape and a translucent, white flesh. It has a wonderful sweet taste and is low in acidity so that it simply melts in the mouth. You really do have to taste this pineapple to believe how good it is!
Weeding is carried out by hand and the weeds are used to mulch and shade the plants. The ripe pineapples are then harvested, also by hand, and then taken to designated collection points where they are picked up by a vehicle everyday and delivered to the factory for cutting and packing.
Any inedible parts of the pineapple are composted and only the freshest, ripest cut-fruits are sent to Waitrose so you don’t have to worry about disposing of any waste!
Some of the benefits of trade that the farmers and their communities have seen over the past ten years include investment in roads and electricity and the construction of bore-holes to provide fresh drinking water. Blue Skies have also assisted by giving loans to farmers and providing ongoing training and support on agricultural practice and sustainability. | http://www.skytrix.co.uk/images/products/105.gif | 105 | Waitrose Sugar Loaf Pineapple | http://www.ocado.com/webshop/getProductDetails.do?sku=36987011&parentContainer=000117791 | prepared |

| -0.3371429443359375 | 5.78466311334988 | 2 | Blue Skies Ghana | This Smooth Cayenne pineapple is grown over a period of sixty weeks and owes its characteristic sweet flavour to Ghana's tropical climate and strong sunshine. The pineapple is picked from the plant only when ripe so as to ensure the best possible flavour.
This particular variety of pineapple is particularly well suited to Ghana's environment and can be grown at a lower cost than some other varieties of pineapple which have recently been introduced to the country. The variety is especially delicious and refreshing as a juice and is less pungent than 'golden' variety which is more common in some supermarkets.
Only the finest quality pineapples are sent to the factory where they are hand-cut and packed and delivered to Waitrose within forty-eight hours. Any inedible parts of the fruit are composted in Ghana so you don’t have to worry about any waste. | http://www.skytrix.co.uk/images/products/131.gif | 131 | Waitrose Pineapple 120g | http://www.ocado.com/webshop/getProductDetails.do?sku=36991011&parentContainer=000117791 | prepared |
